The new NAFTA will be called USMCA

Is Trump Likely to Shift Focus from the Trade War With China to the USMCA Trade Deal?

According to Trump’s economic adviser Larry Kudlow, implementing the USMCA trade agreement among US, Mexico and Canada holds more importance to the US economy than the trade war with China. The USMCA will replace the previous North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and is waiting to be ratified by the governments.

While speaking with CNBC about the USMCA trade deal, Kudlow stated, “We are hoping that Congress will sign off on it … Canada and Mexico are gigantic trading partners and I think in economic terms, that’s probably more important than the China story.”

Is this a hint that Trump is likely to pressure Democrats into ratifying the trade deal before the 2020 Presidential election? Several Democrats have raised concerns about whether the deal does enough to address labor and environmental issues.
