Dell Tumbles 10% as Chip Delays and Supply Constraints Raise Risks to Order Backlog Conversion

Dell Technologies’ (DELL) recent decline is part of a global correction affecting the hardware values of artificial intelligence. Dell’s stock price experienced a sharp sell-off (down as much as 10% stabilizing around $380 after reaching new all-time highs above $460 in early summer 2026,

A wave of sales spread throughout the entire AI hardware value chain (Super Micro Computer, HPE, Micron, SanDisk). Investors secured their gains after spectacular 12-month increases.

The rise in memory component prices has raised direct concerns about margin compression. Analysts (notably Evercore ISI ) have highlighted the risk of erosion of gross margins on the delivery of AI servers.

The conversion of these contracts into net profits remains under pressure due to supply chain costs, although AI server sales are exploding. Dell’s end-to-end AI deployment capability (computing, networking, storage, services) gives it a competitive edge over white-label server builders.

Margin Expansion Potential: Gross margins are positioned to recover from recent memory-cost squeezes as AI server shipments scale and proprietary enterprise storage solutions are attached to server orders. Major Wall Street firms (BofA, Melius, Citi, Bernstein) hold price targets ranging between $480- $700.

Component Cost Pressure: High prices for NAND/DRAM memory and specialized GPUs (NVIDIA/AMD) can compress server margins if price increases aren’t fully passed on to enterprise buyers.

Execution & Lead Times: Supply chain bottlenecks or delayed chip deliveries could lengthen conversion times from order backlog to recognized revenue.
