US Treasury Secretary to Meet Chinese Central Bank’s Governor

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is expected to meet PBOC Governor Yi Gang at a G20 bankers’ meeting in Japan this weekend. This would be the first in-person interaction between US and China negotiators in almost one month even as the trade war continues.

Since the last meeting, each side has blamed the other for the breakdown in talks and neither party has signaled any resumption of discussions yet. The tariff hike on each other’s imports as well as Trump banning Huawei from doing any business with US companies have soured the equation between the two countries considerably.

The meeting was announced officially on Tuesday by a Treasury spokesman, although no details were forthcoming on the agenda. In their previous meetings on the sidelines of the G20 summit, Mnuchin and Yi have been known to discuss issues related to global finance and economy.

Will we see a thaw in the US-China trade war begin at this meeting?
