Can Britain-France Border Become a Key Political Issue After a No-Deal Brexit?

According to British Finance Minister, Philip Hammond, France could delay checks on its borders with Britain in the event of a no-deal Brexit. Hammond has repeatedly warned that a hard Brexit could hamper border arrangements and other key issues while dealing with the EU.

Britain’s borders with France serve as important points for the transition of imports and exports between the UK and the bloc. British businesses have already warned of shortages and disruptions in their operations in the event of delays at these borders.

Hammond is worried that the French government could manipulate its border check-posts as a political tool to get back at Britain in the event of a no-deal Brexit. According to him, “They will use the deployment of those systems as a political tool in what will be quite a row, if we end up leaving in a no-deal scenario. Think the border between Spain and Gibraltar.”
