China Approves Import of Poultry and Poultry Products From the US
Amid the slew of negative headlines about updates on the coronavirus outbreak, here’s some positive news for global markets. Earlier today, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs confirmed that China has cleared the way for import of all poultry and poultry products from US.
China had previously banned the import of these products from the US back in 2015 during the avian influenza outbreak. However, this decision was updated as part of negotiations between the two countries towards securing the phase one trade agreement in November 2019.
The move will enable China to import live birds from the US, increasing the availability of poultry and poultry-based products in the Chinese markets. The US is the leading producer of poultry breeding stock in the world, followed by China. However, China is keen to increase its poultry imports after the recent swine fever outbreak caused a significant reduction in the availability of pork meat and products in its domestic markets.
