Biden Announces New Measures to Prevent Migrants Crossing Illegally into the U.S. from Receiving Asylum

These regulations are not permanent, the White House said. They will be suspended when the number of migrants crossing the border is low.

The White House announced new measures on Tuesday to prevent all migrants who cross the southern border of the United States illegally from receiving asylum. These measures aim to facilitate the expulsion of those not legally protected to stay in the country and reduce the workload of border authorities.

However, it was clarified that these measures, which the White House has not detailed, cannot replace those currently being debated in Congress, which include provisions for additional personnel and funding.

President Joe Biden, 81, will sign an executive order allowing authorities to suspend the entry of asylum seekers and migrants when the number of cases exceeds 2,500 in a single day, according to the White House.

The order will also make deportations to Mexico easier. For Biden, the safety of American families must always come first. That’s why the president is announcing new historic executive actions to prevent migrants who cross our southern border illegally from receiving asylum.

The administration also took the opportunity to once again criticize House Republicans for prioritizing their partisan interests over national security and for voting twice against the “toughest and fairest reforms in decades.”

These regulations are not permanent, the White House emphasized. They will be suspended when the number of migrants crossing the border is sufficiently low for the U.S. system to manage safely and effectively. The measures include humanitarian exceptions, such as unaccompanied minors and victims of trafficking.
