  • Users in the European Economic Area can now trade perpetual contracts in USDC with up to 100x leverage, reflecting Gemini's compliance with EU financial regulations.
  • Staking is gaining traction in Europe, with Ethereum staking deposits increasing by 28% in 2025, while Gemini aims to become a leading exchange in the region.

Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange established by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, is expanding into Europe with additional staking and derivatives options.

Gemini users in the European Economic Area (EEA) can stake Ether (ETH) and Solana (SOL) . They can also trade perpetual contracts priced in Circle’s USDC stablecoin as reported on Friday.

The exchange’s decision is consistent with its overall goal to develop in the European market, which includes regulatory permissions under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) in Malta and the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II) in May.

Gemini Bets on Derivatives Boom as Spot Trading Volumes Decline

Gemini Staking, which is available to both retail and institutional investors, enables users to earn passive income with no minimum staking requirement. Ethereum rewards vary according on market conditions, whereas Solana returns up to 6%.

The new derivatives product, Gemini Perpetuals, allows customers to trade contracts in USDC with up to 100x leverage and no expiration dates. These goods are subject to Gemini’s MiFID II license, indicating that the company complies with European financial standards.

Our goal is to be one of the leading exchanges in Europe, and now that we offer an entire range of products comprising spot exchange, staking, and perpetuals in the europe from one platform, we believe we are a real contender. Mark Jennings, Gemini’s Head of Europe, commented.

The derivatives surge is part of a larger industry change, with spot trading volumes down and demand for derivatives increasing. According to TokenInsight, crypto spot trade volumes decreased by 32% in the first two quarters of 2025, totaling $3.6 trillion. In comparison, derivatives trading volumes totaled $20.2 trillion during the same period.

Ethereum staking deposits soar in the EU.

While cryptocurrency derivatives are regulated by the EU’s MiFID II, staking is controlled indirectly by the MiCA framework, which went into effect in late 2024.

MiCA has spurred considerable increase in institutional staking activity in Europe, with EU staking participation increasing by 39% in 2025, while non-EU staking growth stayed at 22%, according to a CoinLaw research published in June.

Staking is  growing in popularity in Europe, Jennings added, citing CoinLaw data showing that Ethereum staking deposits in the EU increased by 28% in 2025 compared to 2024, totaling $90 billion in staked ETH.

Gemini’s staking and derivatives launch in the EU comes only days after the exchange filed a Form S-1 for an initial public offering in the United States. The company plans to sell 16.67 million shares at prices ranging from $17 to $19 per share, raising up to $317 million.
