U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Wednesday that he secretly authorized the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to carry out covert actions in Venezuela.
The news had been reported hours earlier by The New York Times, which detailed that under these new powers, the CIA would be able to conduct lethal operations inside the Latin American country or in the Caribbean—either unilaterally or as part of a broader military campaign.
This move is part of the pressure the White House is applying on Nicolás Maduro’s regime in an effort to remove him from power.
According to the report, the U.S. military is also preparing various intervention scenarios, which could include strikes on Venezuelan territory.
As of now, dozens of warships and submarines are deployed in the Caribbean, with about 10,000 U.S. troops stationed at bases in Puerto Rico.
The newspaper warned that such interventions would entail significant legal and international risks.
Venezuelan Context and Dictatorship
The announcement comes as the United States has carried out several military operations in recent weeks as part of its war on drug trafficking. The most recent strike allegedly targeted a Venezuelan vessel involved in drug smuggling, bringing the reported death toll to 27.
In response, Maduro has claimed that the United States seeks to impose “puppet governments” in Caracas to seize the country’s natural resources, and warned that a nationwide mobilization would be launched if Washington carries out another attack.
According to Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López, the country is already “at war” with the United States—although no official declaration has been made.
