Google Partners with NextEra to Revive Iowa Nuke Plant for AI Era

Google announced a partnership with NextEra Energy, a major U.S. electrical utility

Google earnings will be released tomorrow after US markets close

Quick overview

  • Google has partnered with NextEra Energy to revitalize Iowa's only nuclear power plant, aiming to meet the demand for low-carbon energy for AI.
  • The Duane Arnold Energy Center, which closed in 2020, may reopen by early 2029 if regulations are approved, providing a 615-MW carbon-free energy source.
  • The resurgence of nuclear energy is part of a broader trend as tech firms invest heavily in AI data centers amid rising energy demands.
  • Similar partnerships in the nuclear sector, like Microsoft's with Constellation Energy, highlight the industry's potential to support Big Tech's expansion.

Google announced a partnership with NextEra Energy, a major U.S. electrical utility, to revitalize Iowa’s only nuclear power plant to meet the growing demand for low-carbon energy from artificial intelligence. It may reopen in early 2029 if the necessary regulations are approved, although the Duane Arnold Energy Center closed in 2020.

Google will purchase electricity from the 615-MW plant as a 24/7, carbon-free energy source to support the company’s growing cloud and AI infrastructure in Iowa and enhance local grid reliability.

The nuclear industry was struggling to compete with natural gas and other renewable energy sources because of high operating costs and problems with public perception of safety

The nuclear site’s resurgence, however, is part of a trend as US energy demand has been rising and tech firms like Google have spent billions building power-hungry AI data centers.

The US Energy Information Administration reports that the country’s overall annual electricity consumption reached a record high in 2024; if data centers keep growing at their current rate, this ceiling may rise further. Washington and the tech sector have been promoting nuclear energy as a potential solution to the growing concerns about the impact of AI computing on regional energy grids amid rising energy demands.

Similar nuclear alliances, such as the one between Microsoft and Constellation Energy, are followed by the Iowa project. Oracle, a major player in the computer industry, recently announced that it is planning a data center that will be powered by three tiny nuclear reactors.

Nuclear energy not only brings more energy online, but it also offers Big Tech a way to continue expanding its data centers.
