Ethereum’s Fusaka Upgrade to Boost Layer-2 Speed by 400% This December

Ethereum’s long-awaited Fusaka upgrade has cleared its final testnet hurdle and is officially scheduled for mainnet deployment...

Quick overview

  • Ethereum's Fusaka upgrade is set for mainnet deployment around December 3, following successful tests on multiple testnets.
  • The upgrade introduces PeerDAS, a data-availability system that could increase blob capacity by over 400% and significantly reduce transaction costs on layer-2 networks.
  • Fusaka aims to enhance Ethereum's scalability and efficiency, improving throughput for popular rollups like Arbitrum and Optimism.
  • Market reactions to Fusaka's testnet success have been mixed, with ETH experiencing fluctuations amid broader crypto market trends.

Ethereum’s long-awaited Fusaka upgrade has cleared its final testnet hurdle and is officially scheduled for mainnet deployment around December 3. The update—seen as the network’s most consequential since Dencun—introduces PeerDAS, a data-availability system expected to expand blob storage and dramatically cut transaction costs across layer-2 (L2) networks.

After successful rollouts on Holesky and Sepolia, Fusaka’s third and final test on the Hoodi testnet went live without issues. The upgrade is now green-lit for launch, setting the stage for faster and more efficient Ethereum operations.

Developers say PeerDAS could boost blob capacity by more than 400%, creating a scalable foundation for low-fee, high-volume L2 transactions. Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called the new system “the key to layer-2 scaling,” emphasizing its role in enabling blockchains that operate efficiently without requiring every node to download full data.

How Fusaka Transforms Layer-2 Efficiency

The Fusaka update leverages everything we learned from last year’s Dencun upgrade, which brought in “blobs” – these handy little temporary data containers that totally chopped L2 gas fees down to size. Now Fusaka takes things to the next level by making those blobs even roomier within each block and adding in PeerDAS to help make sure data is accurately sampled and verified across the network.

This shift means Ethereum can process more L2 transactions at lower cost, without sacrificing decentralization. Developers believe it will improve the throughput of popular rollups such as Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base, where transaction volumes continue to climb.

Key Fusaka enhancements:

  • PeerDAS integration for decentralized data sampling and scalability.
  • 400% increase in blob space, lowering per-transaction data costs.
  • Optimized fee markets for layer-2 settlement efficiency.
  • Reduced latency in block confirmation for off-chain rollups.

Together, these changes strengthen Ethereum’s ability to serve as a global settlement layer while making L2 chains cheaper, faster, and more sustainable.

Market Reaction and What’s Next

After news of Fusaka’s testnet success broke, ETH rose to $3,947 but promptly dropped by about 5% amid broader crypto market jitters. Over on Myriad, traders are getting a bit more hopeful that ETH will break through $4,500 before sliding back down to $3,100, that’s an expectation based on them still being a bit cautious with a mainnet upgrade on the horizon

The fact that Fusaka is getting deployed is just one more sign of how far along Ethereum is in transitioning to a modular, scalable architecture – and one that definitely prioritises security while keeping performance in the picture. And I think we can all credit Buterin on that one, who recently said “This is all brand new tech & those devs are doing the right thing to be careful about it.”

If successful, Fusaka could redefine how data availability powers the next generation of layer-2 blockchains, marking Ethereum’s strongest advance toward mass-scale adoption.
