The cryptocurrency industry saw a wild ride in 2025, with mergers and acquisitions shooting past a record $8.6 billion, according to the latest figures from PitchBook, as reported by the Financial Times. That’s an 18% leap from the year before & 4x the $2.17 billion that got spent the year before. And it’s not just a one-off, either – the fact that 267 deals went down, covering acquisitions, strategic investments & consolidations, says a lot about just how confident investors are feeling.

Some of the biggest deals included Coinbase shelling out a whopping $2.9 billion for Deribit, touted as the largest takeover in crypto history, and Kraken pulling off a serious coup with its $1.5 billion purchase of NinjaTrader, which had just posted a 19% revenue increase in Q1. Meanwhile, blockchain payments company Ripple snapped up crypto prime broker Hidden Road for $1.25 billion in a bid to really crack the institutional market.

Key 2025 M&A Highlights

  • Coinbase drops a pretty penny to buy Deribit: $2.9billion
  • Kraken makes some serious cash by buying NinjaTrader: $1.5 billion
  • Ripple makes a big splash by acquiring Hidden Road: $1.25billion

Crypto IPO Market Sees A Rollercoaster Ride

Crypto companies were also making serious strides in the public markets. A whopping eleven IPOs came to market in 2025, raising $14.6 billion – a sevenfold increase on the $310 million that got raised in 2024 by a mere four listings. And of those, Circle took top spot with a $16.7 billion debut on the NYSE, with Peter Thiel-backed Bullish hot on its heels with a valuation of $13 billion. Other notable new kids on the block included Figure Technologies & eToro.

Companies like Kraken & BitGo are now queuing up for their own public offerings, with market analysts tipping even more big-name listings in 2026. And it’s not just a random surge – the fact that investors are feeling more confident with clearer regulations in place has got to be a big part of it.

Regulatory Clarity Sets The Stage For Growth

Industry insiders are pinning the recent uptick in deal activity on the new regulatory clarity introduced during the Trump administration. New policies like the GENIUS Act & the creation of a national crypto reserve, plus the SEC finally dropping several high-profile lawsuits against major exchanges, have got the traditional financial crowd getting in on the act.

Charles Kerrigan from law firm CMS reckons 2025 was the busiest year for crypto deals “hands down” & thinks that same level of M&A activity will keep going strong in 2026. Analysts are tipping that continued regulatory support & institutional adoption will keep driving the market forward.

Takeaways for Investors

  • Clarity leads to confidence.
  • Institutional interest fuels M&A & IPOs.
  • 2025 sets a new high bar for crypto growth.
