What Is Going to Happen to TikTok as US Bill Halts at the Senate?

The TikTok bill has passed the House of Representatives and is now headed to the Senate for deliberation as US citizens protest.

The US House of Representatives passed  a bill by a large majority that could ban TikTok. Now, the bill is going through the Senate where it is being debated.

The bill faces an uphill battle against American sentiment.

It still has to pass by the desk for US president Joe Biden, who could choose to veto the bill entirely.

While this proposed bill does not completely ban TikTok, for many voters, that is essentially what it amounts to. The bill in its current state calls for the Chinese company that owns TikTok to sell its ownership intel popular social media video app to a US-based company.

How that would work and how that would affect TikTok as a service would remain to be seen, but the primary concern being put forth with this bill is that it would take Chinese government interest away from the US version TikTok. American politicians who have drafted the bill are worried that the Chinese government is using TikTok to spy on American citizens and to influence elections. They believe it is important to act now with this bill when the US is going through an election year that may pit Donald Trump against current President Joe Biden.

The Next Step

The bill is being deliberated by the US Senate now. It is facing backlash from private citizens who have rallied at the Capitol to protest and make their voices heard. They have been calling their senators by the thousands to make sure that their vote is being counted along with that of the politicians. Many of the signs they hold remind reports and politicians that there are 170 million US users on the TikTok platform.

The Senate may decide to approve the bill as it is or modify some things before they pass it on to the President. The bill could stay in deliberation at the Senate for a while, so we may not see immediate action on it.
