The email addresses of many professionals in the cryptocurrency industry, including Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, Binance co-founder, was among the leaked data, according to the most recent update released by SlowMist’s pseudonymous chief information security officer, “23pds.”.
‘Numerous email addresses belonging to foreign cryptocurrency practitioners, including well-known individuals, businesses, and key opinion leaders (KOLs) in the field, were among the 7 million pieces of leaked data that could threaten the industry’s asset security and privacy in the future. “
According to a recent CertiK report, phishing became the most expensive attack vector in 2024, resulting in 296 incidents with losses of $1.05 million, including three instances where losses exceeded $100 million.
This represented 39.1% of all incidents and almost half of the total stolen value that year, suggesting that phishing typically causes larger losses per attack than other vulnerabilities.
According to the blockchain security company, phishing is still common among attackers because it is easy to use and efficient. Instead of focusing only on technical systems, it takes advantage of human frailties. Attackers trick users into divulging private information, such as wallet addresses, private keys, or passwords, by sending them false emails, phony websites, or fraudulent messages.
Phishing is particularly destructive in this sector because cryptocurrency transactions are irreversible and stolen funds cannot be recovered unless the attacker returns them. Consequently, the second quarter of 2024 saw the largest quarterly losses from phishing, totaling over $433 million.
