Toyota announced on Thursday that it sold 10.8 million cars in 2024, maintaining its position as the world’s best-selling carmaker for a fifth consecutive year. The Japanese automaker reported a 3.7 percent decline in global group unit sales in 2024, including sales of trucks from Hino Motors and compact cars from Daihatsu.
A sharp drop in sales in Japan, where the carmaker was hit by governance problems over certification test procedures, particularly at Daihatsu, was a major factor in the decline.
Volkswagen Group, the second-ranked German competitor, posted a 2.3 percent drop in unit sales last year to just over 9 million vehicles as it looks to reduce expenses domestically and fight a price war in crucial market China.
Toyota’s parent-only car sales, which include those of its namesake and Lexus brands, dropped 14% from the previous year in 2024 to 10.2 million vehicles, primarily because of a double-digit drop in Japan.
Unit sales in China fell by 60.9 percent due to fierce price competition in the world’s largest automobile market, even though Toyota sold a record number of cars overall, partly because of the demand for its hybrid vehicles in the US.
The percentage of gasoline-electric hybrids in its parent-only sales reached 40.8%. Auto mobility powered by batteries made up 1.4 percent.
