Huawei's temporary reprieve to get extended?

US Government to Extend Huawei’s Temporary Reprieve?

According to a recent Reuters report, the US government is likely to announce a 90-day extension for a license that will permit American companies to continue their business liaison with Huawei even after it was added to the Entity List. An earlier report on Friday suggested that the government could grant a two-week extension initially and finalize a longer extension after resolving regulatory challenges.

As the trade war escalated, the US had added Chinese tech leader Huawei to its trade blacklist in May, preventing American companies from supplying technologies and components to Huawei. However, the US Commerce Department granted a 90-day temporary reprieve to the ban to avoid disruption for American consumers who depended on Huawei’s technology.

This reprieve is set to expire soon, and an official announcement regarding an extension is expected to be made today. Although, there have been no official comments from Huawei or the Commerce Department on these rumors so far.

The US government had added Huawei to its Entity List citing threat to national security, alleging that the Chinese government used its technology to spy on international citizens and businesses. When speaking about this issue late last week, US Commerce Secretary had hinted at the possibility of an extension, remarking, “There are enough problems with telephone service in the rural communities – we don’t want to knock them out. So, one of the main purposes of the temporary general licenses is to let those rural guys continue to operate.”
