US Government Grants 90-Day Extension on Temporary Reprieve to Huawei

As reported on Monday, the Trump administration granted another 90-day extension to American companies to continue their business with Huawei after it was added to the US Entity List. This is the third such extension granted so that American consumers of Huawei’s technology and services do not face disruption in their operations in the aftermath of the ban.

Meanwhile, US regulators are still drafting rules for telecom firms like Huawei that pose a threat to national security. The US government had added Huaei to its trade blacklist over concerns that the Chinese government was misusing Huawei’s technology and equipment to spy on international businesses and citizens, and posed a risk to US national security.

Initial reports suggested that the Commerce Department would grant a two-week extension on the reprieve until it resolves the issue, but bureaucratic hurdles caused the government to announce a 90-day extension instead. According to US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, The Department will continue to rigorously monitor sensitive technology exports to ensure that our innovations are not harnessed by those who would threaten our national security.”

Huawei’s reaction to the extension has been a guarded one, stating that this move has caused more economic harm to US businesses than to its own company. According to Huawei, “This decision does not change the fact that Huawei continues to be treated unfairly either.”
