The Brexit deal is important for the UK, because without it, it would mean a hard Brexit, despite the Brexit deal which passed the UK parliament late last year. The Brexit drama has been dragging for years now, but everyone knew it would.

The comments have been negative most of the time, suggesting a hard Brexit, since both sides were standing firm on their positions. Although today we heard the chief EU Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier make some positive comments for a change, suggesting that BoJo wants a deal too. Below are his comments:

Reuters citing EU diplomatic sources

  • Barnier believes Johnson wants a deal despite publicly talking up readiness for no-deal exit
  • Barnier told EU envoys after latest talks that he remains confident that balanced agreement is possible but might be less ambitious
  • ‘Low quality, low profile’ deal would need to include provisions on level playing field and fisheries
There was no reaction in the pound to these headlines earlier today. After all, the market has plenty to focus on today aside from Brexit talks, which will drag for months. But GBP/USD has turned bullish again now, as the USD resumes he decline.
