Elon Musk, whose artificial intelligence startup xAI owns the Grok AI chatbot app, threatened Apple with legal action on Monday over alleged antitrust violations related to the app’s rankings. “Apple is acting in a way that prevents any AI company other than OpenAI from ranking number one in the App Store, which is a clear antitrust violation,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X.
He added, “xAI will take immediate legal action.” “Why do you refuse to put either X or Grok in your ‘Must Have’ section when X is the world’s #1 news app and Grok is number five among all apps? Are you playing politics?”
Musk stated in a separate post. Last year, Apple partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its desktop and laptop MAC computers, iPhones, and iPads. At that time, Musk declared that “Apple devices will be prohibited at my companies if Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level,” citing security concerns.
Musk commended Grok for surpassing Google to become the fifth-ranked free app in the App Store.. CNBC confirmed that ChatGPT holds the top spot, being the only AI chatbot in Apple’s “Must-Have Apps” section and ranked number one among the top free apps in the US iOS store.
A link to download ChatGPT-5, OpenAI’s latest flagship AI model, was prominently displayed at the top of the App Store’s “Apps” section. After xAI launched its newest chatbot, Grok 4, last month, OpenAI announced GPT-5, its latest and most advanced large-scale AI model, on Thursday.
Musk remains at odds with OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT and which he co-founded in 2015. Four years after warning that AI could be “potentially more dangerous than nukes,” Musk resigned from OpenAI’s board in 2018..
