Quick overview

  • The Ethereum Foundation is collaborating with the nonprofit Security Alliance to combat wallet-draining scams through the 'Trillion Dollar Security' initiative.
  • A dedicated security engineer will analyze evolving drainer tactics to enhance ecosystem protection.
  • Recent data shows a significant drop in losses from wallet drainers, but the EF and SEAL emphasize the need for ongoing improvements.
  • The partnership also focuses on threat intelligence sharing, legal protections for ethical hackers, and victim assistance to strengthen the crypto ecosystem.

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) is taking action against the growing problem of wallet-draining scams by teaming up with the nonprofit Security Alliance (SEAL). Their new “Trillion Dollar Security” initiative focuses on stopping attackers before they act, moving from fixing problems after the fact to preventing them with better intelligence.

As part of this partnership, the EF is paying for a security engineer to work directly with SEAL’s intelligence team. This expert’s only job is to study how “drainers”—malicious scripts that trick users into giving up their assets—are changing, and to find ways to protect the whole ecosystem.

A Data-Driven War on Wallet Drainers

Wallet drainers have long been a major threat in decentralized finance (DeFi). Recent data from ScamSniffer shows that these scams have taken almost $1 billion from users over time.

But joint efforts across the industry are making a difference. In 2025, losses from drainer-related thefts dropped to $83.85 million, the lowest ever. Even with this 83% drop from the previous year, the EF and SEAL believe that any loss means the system still needs improvement.

“The world is ready for our tech; we want to ensure our tech is ready for the world,” stated the EF’s security team during the program’s rollout.

Measuring Safety: The Trillion Dollar Dashboard

To make Ethereum’s security more transparent, the partnership has created a public Trillion Dollar Security dashboard. This tool measures how strong the network is in six key areas:

  • User Experience (UX): Monitoring how wallets and interfaces prevent accidental approvals.
  • Smart Contracts: Auditing the integrity of the code powering dApps.
  • Infrastructure & Cloud: Ensuring the stability of nodes and RPC providers.
  • Consensus Protocol: Protecting the core layer of the blockchain.
  • Monitoring & Incident Response: Speeding up the detection of active exploits.
  • Social Layer & Governance: Addressing risks like stake centralization.

The name “Trillion Dollar Security” highlights what’s at risk. As of early 2026, Ethereum protects more than $600 billion in on-chain assets. The aim is to make the network strong enough to safely handle trillions in the future.

Beyond Code: Legal Shields and White-Hats

The partnership goes further than just technical solutions. SEAL’s mission also includes:

  1. Threat Intelligence Sharing: Distributing real-time data across the crypto industry.
  2. Safe Harbor for White-Hats: Providing legal protections for ethical hackers who find and report vulnerabilities in good faith.
  3. Victim Assistance: Helping individuals and protocols respond to live incidents.

The EF praised SEAL’s work, saying the ecosystem has “benefited tremendously” from their efforts. This approach could become a model for other blockchain networks, and SEAL is encouraging more groups to join in to expand these protections across Web3.
