Authorities have carried out one of the biggest coordinated crackdowns on cryptocurrency fraud, arresting at least 276 people and shutting down nine overseas scam centers as part of Operation Tri-Force Sentinel.
Dubai Police led the operation with help from the FBI in San Diego, China’s Ministry of Public Security, and Thai police. They focused on three organized groups running complex “pig-butchering” (sha zhu pan) scams that mainly targeted Americans.
How the Scams Operated
Scammers spent weeks or months building fake romantic or friendly relationships on social media and dating apps. They convinced victims to invest in fake crypto trading platforms, often using USDT. After victims deposited money, the scammers emptied the accounts and laundered the money through complicated networks.
These scams have led to billions of dollars in losses worldwide. The FBI has already warned nearly 9,000 possible victims and helped prevent or recover about $562 million.

Key Outcomes
- 275 suspects arrested in the UAE, 1 in Thailand.
- Six individuals (including Burmese and Indonesian nationals) face U.S. federal wire fraud and money laundering charges in the Southern District of California.
- Multiple fugitives remain wanted.
This operation shows a new level of international teamwork against scam centers, which are often connected to human trafficking and crypto money laundering. Meta also reportedly helped trace data.
Why It Matters in 2026
This crackdown sends a clear warning to organized crypto crime groups. Pig-butchering is still one of the most harmful types of fraud, using fake investment platforms to trick people out of their life savings.
The success of Tri-Force Sentinel shows that global efforts to stop these scams and protect everyday crypto investors are increasing. More arrests and extraditions are likely as the investigation goes on.
