NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) traded near $200.75 on August 3, valuing the company at approximately $4.90 trillion. Record AI demand remains intact, but investors are increasingly focused on NVIDIA’s reported discussions around a potential $250 billion financing backstop for an OpenAI-linked data-center project and whether supporting customers financially could create circular-funding risks.

NVIDIA’s operating performance remains exceptional, with quarterly revenue up 85% and Data Center sales up 92%. The debate has changed, however. Investors are now asking whether AI customers can finance increasingly expensive infrastructure independently, or whether NVIDIA will need to commit more capital, guarantees and vendor financing to sustain demand for its own systems.

NVIDIA’s $81.6 Billion Quarter Confirms Exceptional AI Demand

NVIDIA’s latest reported results cover the first quarter of fiscal 2027, which ended April 26. The company reported record revenue of $81.6 billion, up 20% sequentially and 85% year over year. Data Center revenue reached $75.2 billion, rising 92% and representing roughly 92% of total sales.

The revenue mix shows that NVIDIA is no longer primarily selling standalone graphics processors. Its growth increasingly comes from complete AI systems combining Blackwell accelerators, Grace CPUs, networking, interconnects, software and rack-scale infrastructure.

GAAP gross margin reached 74.9%, while GAAP diluted EPS was $2.39. The quarter also included substantial gains on marketable equity investments, meaning investors should distinguish reported net income from recurring operating earnings. NVIDIA nevertheless generated approximately $50.3 billion in operating cash flow, demonstrating the underlying cash strength of the business.

Balance Sheet Supports an $80 Billion Buyback

NVIDIA’s financial position remains unusually strong. The company held about $50.3 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable debt securities at quarter-end, alongside a sizeable portfolio of marketable equity investments.

During fiscal Q1, NVIDIA repurchased 108 million shares for $20.2 billion. The board subsequently authorized an additional $80 billion in repurchases and increased the quarterly dividend from $0.01 to $0.25 per share. NVIDIA disclosed the repurchases and authorization in its SEC filing.

That balance-sheet capacity gives NVIDIA room to invest across the AI ecosystem. It also explains why investors are taking the company’s potential financing commitments seriously.

$250 Billion OpenAI Backstop Raises Circular-Financing Concerns

The Wall Street Journal reported that NVIDIA was discussing a potential $250 billion financial guarantee connected to an OpenAI data-center project in Ohio. The proposed guarantee would reportedly support lease and construction financing, while separate discussions could involve financing hundreds of billions of dollars of NVIDIA hardware. No final agreement has been publicly confirmed. The Wall Street Journal reported the financing discussions here.

The report sent NVIDIA shares down about 5% on July 27, erasing roughly $250 billion in market value during the session. Investors questioned whether NVIDIA could become increasingly exposed to the creditworthiness, construction risk and utilization rates of customers buying its chips.

NVIDIA has also committed $5 billion to Safe Superintelligence, the AI company founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. Reuters and the Financial Times reported that the partnership includes access to NVIDIA’s next-generation Vera Rubin infrastructure.

These investments may accelerate AI deployment, but they also complicate the quality-of-demand debate. Revenue generated by independently funded customers is financially different from sales supported by supplier guarantees or strategic investment capital.

August 26 Earnings Will Test the $91 Billion Guidance

NVIDIA is scheduled to report fiscal Q2 2027 results on August 26 at 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time. The company previously guided for revenue of $91 billion, plus or minus 2%. This remains guidance, not a reported result. NVIDIA confirms the reporting date on its investor-relations calendar.

Investors will focus on Blackwell demand, networking growth, Rubin timing, advanced-memory availability, export restrictions and whether customer financing exposure is increasing.
