Secretary of State of the US, Antony Blinken, travels to LATAM
Blinken travels to South America to meet with Lula da Silva and Milei. What’s behind the interests of the United States?
Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Brazil and Argentina next week and will meet with the presidents of both countries, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Javier Milei, in an effort to strengthen ties with two of the most important economies in Latin America.
Blinken, who is currently in Germany attending a security conference, plans to visit Brasília and Rio de Janeiro before moving on to Buenos Aires, said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller in a brief press release.
The trip comes at a time when Argentina is facing a delicate economic situation and just over two months after Milei took office. Blinken will also visit Brazil just over a year after Da Silva took office, a center-left leader who succeeded President Jair Bolsonaro in early 2023.
Along with Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil represent the largest economies in Latin America.
The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, is paradoxically scheduled to speak on Saturday, February 24th, at a conference of conservative leaders taking place in Washington, where Trump’s participation is also expected on the same day. The contrast is huge as Blinken is part of the Biden administration.
In Brasilia, Blinken will meet with Da Silva to emphasize US support for Brazil’s presidency of the G-20 and for Rio de Janeiro to host the Foreign Ministers Meeting of that group, which includes some of the world’s most important economies, said Miller.
In Buenos Aires, he will meet with Milei to discuss economic, trade, and investment issues, as well as human rights and democracy, among others.
