Don’t Choose Candidates on Crypto Stance Alone, Says Ethereum Co-Founder

Ethereum's co-founder is warning voters that they need to be careful about choosing candidates based only on their crypto stance.

Vitalik Buterin

The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, said on Wednesday that it would be unwise to pick a presidential candidate solely on the fact that they support cryptocurrency.

Buterin warns against how people pick candidates.

He used his blog post to warn voters that they should be looking at the wider policies of any candidate and not just at the fact that they were pro-crypto. The broader policies could help inform voters of their true intentions and the underlying objectives of cryptocurrency. He asked people to consider whether the candidates are trying to protect private communication and international cooperation and trading, which are the primary goals of decentralized finance products like crypto.

Buterin says that each candidate should be considered on the basis of whether their take on politics and technology lines up with that of the voters.

A Warning on Bad Faith Promotion

Buterin continued in his warning to voters as the US election looms, taking place this November. He said that if voters support candidates based on whether they are pro-crypto, then those candidates may make crypto a strong part of their platform in “bad faith”. The candidates might focus on that part of their campaign and make it easy to distract from other policies that would not be in tune with voters’ beliefs.

While Buterin was not naming names when it came to presidential candidates, his blog post came shortly after Donald Trump received public endorsement by Ben Horowitz and Marc Andreessen. Together, they founded Andreessen Horowitz, one of the largest venture capital firms in the world. They threw their support behind this candidate because they said that he offers blanket endorsement for the crypto space.

The strong endorsement from Trump for crypto currency has fueled much of the conversation about political candidates in the cryptocurrency market. Buterin simply wants voters to look at other issues outside of a simple stance on pro-crypto or not.
