Binance Founder Changpeng Zhao Freed After $50M Fine and Short Sentence

Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao has been released from U.S. custody after serving a four-month sentence for violating the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA).

Zhao’s imprisonment stemmed from Binance’s failure to implement adequate know-your-customer (KYC) procedures. In addition to the prison time, CZ agreed to pay a $50 million personal fine and step down as CEO of Binance.

Legal Troubles and Fines

The federal investigation into Binance concluded with the exchange paying $4.3 billion in fines, one of the largest corporate penalties in U.S. history. Despite stepping down as CEO, CZ still holds a 90% stake in Binance, making him one of the wealthiest individuals in the world, with an estimated net worth of $61 billion.

The DOJ initially sought a three-year sentence, but U.S. District Judge Richard Jones handed down a lighter four-month term. CZ’s clean record and positive contributions to the crypto industry swayed the judge’s decision.
