President Donald Trump announced that he had consented to extending the European Union’s 50% tariff deadline until July 9. On Truth Social, Trump posted, “I got a call today from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, asking for an extension on the June 1st deadline on the 50 percent Tariff concerning Trade and the European Union.”
. “It was my honor to accept the extension on July 9, 2025,” he continued.
President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X that the US and the EU share the most consequential and close trade relationship in the world after saying she had a “good call” with Trump, but needed until July 9 to “reach a good deal.”
“Europe is prepared to move forward with negotiations swiftly and decisively,” she added.
As part of his broad “reciprocal tariffs,” Trump levied 20 percent tariffs on the EU before lowering the rate to 10 percent for 90 days on April 9. However, Trump last week proposed imposing a “straight 50% tariff” on the EU starting in July.
