Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has fired back against what he sees as ”bogus claims” made by David Sacks, the ex Trump appointed AI and crypto official, who slammed the San Francisco based AI firm for pushing a ‘woke agenda’ and trying to muscle in regulators.
In a statement up on Anthropic’s website, Amodei rejected the allegations saying in essence that the company is totally in line with the Trump administration’s priorities on AI safety innovation and the States leadership in emerging technologies.
“I’m dead sure that Anthropic, the administration and other leaders on the other side of the political fence all want the same thing: to make sure that super smart A I works out for the American people” , Amodei wrote.
This whole thing started when Sacks an online critic of Jack Clark Anthropic’s co founder and head of policy, had a go at Clark after Clark put out an essay called “Technological Optimism and Appropriate Fear”. Clark’s piece called for sensible AI regulation and sparked a right old debate across Silicon Valley and Washington.
Sacks then accused Anthropic of trying carry out a “regulatory capture strategy” to block competition – a charge Amodei promptly shot down as a load of rubbish and politically motivated.
Anthropic Makes Its Industry Credentials Clear
Amodei also defended Anthropic’s part in developing the startup and developer community in his response.
“we work with tens of thousands of startups and we partner with hundreds of accelerators and VCs. Claude is powering a new generation of AI-only companies. Damaging that ecosystem would be bonkers for us”
He pointed out that Anthropic is pushing for a national AI policy framework rather than a messy patchwork of state laws, arguing that clear federal standards are a must for both safety and innovation.
Important Points:
- Anthropic reached a valuation of $183 billion in just four years.
- They’re in favour of balanced AI regulation at a national level.
- Operating as a public benefit corporation they’re working on safe and accessible AI.
Amodei wrapped up by saying Anthropic’s mission is to keep America ahead of the game in responsible AI development.
Prominent Figures Get Involved
The row brought in some other high profile names, including LinkedIn co founder Reid Hoffman, who stepped in on x(formerly Twitter) and defended Anthropic saying they are “one of the good guys”. Reid’s investment firm Greylock partners actually invested in Anthropic.
Sacks then right back at him saying this showed Reid was pushing the “woke AI” agenda, prompting Reid to fire back:-
” shows you didn’t even read the post. When you are ready to have a grown up conversation about the impact of AI on America Ill be happy to chat”
Even Elon Musk chipped in echoing Sacks criticisms
This whole thing highlights how the whole AI regulation thing has become a real political hot potato – it’s where America’s high tech ambitions now clash with people’s differing views on power ethics and national identity.
