The Chinese government has confirmed that the Vice Premier Liu He will visit the US later this week for the next round of trade talks. Chinese media had reported that there was a possibility of him cancelling the trip after Trump announced more tariffs.

Liu is expected to be in Washington on May 9 and May 10, but there is no clarity yet on what is on the agenda.

According to US officials, the latest round of tariffs have been a result of China going back on some key commitments agreed to over the course of discussions. The new tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods from 10% to 25% are set to begin on Friday.

Beijing, meanwhile, remains hopeful that both sides can resolve their difference and move ahead towards finalizing a trade deal that is mutually beneficial.
