According to a finance ministry official, the UK government will not select the next governor for the BOE until after the general elections on December 12. Typically, governments do not make important decisions in the run-up to polls.

The next governor of the BOE will have his work cut out for him as he will have to figure out ways to get the British economy to cope with the repercussions of Brexit as soon as he assumes office. The current BOE governor Mark Carney is due to retire on the extended Brexit deadline, January 31, 2020.

However, the unforeseen delay in Brexit post the most recent extension also raises the possibility of Carney postponing his exit from the BOE for some time. An extension in his term could help the BOE cope better with the abrupt changes and any immediate fallout of Britain’s departure from the EU.

Finance Minister Sajid Javid had previously signaled that the government is keen to appoint an independent-minded individual as the next governor for the central bank. Possible successors being speculated in the media include current deputy governor Minouche Shafik and a former deputy governor Paul Tucker.
