OpenSea Glitch burned $100k Worth of NFTs

OpenSea, the world’s first and most extensive digital marketplace for digital collectibles and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), had a bug on its platform that burned around 42 traded NFTs, amounting to $100,000.Â
Nick Johnson, leading developer at ENS, discovered the glitch when he tried to transfer an ENS NFT to his personal account using the OpenSea platform. Fascinated by PaperclipDAO’s performance, he tried to offer an exciting NFT for trade. He tweeted that the ENS name “rilxxlir.eth” was held by an ENS account. Therefore, he needed to transfer it back to his account. He then used OpenSea, hit “transfer,” and to his surprise, his rilxxlir.eth NFT was sent to a burn address. Sadly, this transaction was irreversible.
He then reached out to OpenSea about the incident and they confirmed that he was the first and only victim of the bug. Later on, Johnson received complaints from other people who were affected, and he identified 32 transactions involving 42 NFTs, that were also affected.
The latest tweets from Johnson and OpenSea claim that the issue has been resolved. OpenSea has reached out to the affected users and tweeted that they fixed the glitch on the same day.Â
Meanwhile, reports stated that transaction volumes on OpenSea are on a sharp decline. For the first time since August 21, its daily transactions amounted to less than $100 million, dropping by 75% in volume in just ten days, which reflects the strong declining trend.
