FSIS Warns Against Not-RTE Pork And Beef Bacon Products

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service or FSIS has warned against Farmstead Butcher Block LLC’s not-ready-to-eat pork and beef bacon products citing sodium nitrite levels above the regulatory limit.

The public health alert has been issued to ensure that consumers are aware about the excess level of sodium nitrite in the product. A recall was not requested as the affected product is no longer available for purchase.

The impacted products include packages purchased by weight at the retail counter containing Farmstead branded Local House Smoked Bacon, Butcher Block Buck Board Bacon, Butcher Block Pork Jowl Whole House Smoked, and Butcher Block House Smoked Beef Bacon. All these products bear sell by dates MAY.2.24 through JUN.27.24.

The affected products also include around 1 pound packages containing Clark Farms branded Smoked Pork Jowl Bacon, Smoked Pork Bacon, and Smoked Pork Shoulder Bacon, all with lot code H130RH; Farmstead Butcher Block Smoked Pork Jowl Bacon and Butcher Block Smoked Pork Bacon, both with lot code H81AB, as well as Southwinds Cattle Company Smoked Beef Belly Bacon with lot code B237AB.

The dry cured pork and beef bacon items were produced between April 12, 2024, and May 31, 2024, some of which bear establishment number “EST. 47852” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

These items were shipped to farmers markets and farm stores in Kentucky and Tennessee as well as direct-to-consumer sales. The other items sold by various weight were purchased from the retail counter at Farmstead Butcher Block.

The alert was issued after the agnecy discovered, while performing routine inspection activities, that the establishment’s formulation of sodium nitrite, a restricted ingredient, exceeded the regulatory limit.

However, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products so far.

Over concern that some product may be in consumers’ freezers, the FSIS urged them to throw away the product or return to the place of purchase.

In similar incidents, the FSIS earlier this week alerted against a salad product labeled as Bistro Grande Southwestern Style with Chicken citing misbranding and undeclared wheat and fish (anchovies) allergens.

The FSIS also warned against Brett Anthony Foods’ Wow Bao bao Thai-style curry chicken sold by Walmart Inc. retail stores, citing misbranding and undeclared soy and sesame allergens.
