Mexican indices rose slightly, in contrast to their counterparts on Wall Street.
Mexican stock exchanges are trading with gains on Friday. Local indices are rising slightly, in contrast with their counterparts on Wall Street, after the release of US labor data that would support a Fed rate cut but not as soon as expected.
The leading index S&P/BMV IPC, of the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV), which measures the 35 most traded local stocks, was up 0.21% at 55,164.64 points. The FTSE BIVA, of the Institutional Stock Exchange (Biva), is gaining 0.30% at a level of 1,141.61 units.
Within the benchmark index, most stocks are trading with gains. Shares of the industrial conglomerate Alfa stand out, with an improvement of 1.41% at 12.22 pesos, followed by Orbia, which is up 1.30% at a price of 31.85 pesos.
The indices are also advancing after two consecutive days of losses, amid market caution and setbacks in the airline sector. Despite today’s gains, they are poised to close the week on a negative note.
This occurs in a context where a report detailed that Four out of ten jobs in Mexico are at high risk of being automated, according to the report “The risk of automation in Mexico. Temporal and generational differences among different occupations,” published by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
The report, which analyzes the risks facing certain occupations due to automation between 2005 and 2024 within the Mexican labor market, shows that 11.3% of occupations face a medium risk of being automated and 11.7% face a low risk. In total, 64.4% of jobs in Mexico face some risk of being automated.
Similarly, it might be assumed that individuals with lower risks of automation in their jobs are those with better education, a belief that is also somewhat challenged by the report. The study suggests that education plays a diminishing role in influencing the risk an individual faces regarding automation in their occupation.
