Nasdaq up 1.4% as AI Chip Stocks Show Signs of Recovery

Chip stocks are up and the market is focused on quarterly earnings from major companies like IBM and Alphabet this week.

Chip stocks are on the rise this week after declines last week.

Quick overview

  • Stock market indices rose on Tuesday, driven by optimism over upcoming earnings reports and a rebound in AI semiconductor stocks.
  • The Nasdaq Composite increased by 1.3%, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones gained 0.4% and 0.3%, respectively.
  • 3M and General Motors reported strong earnings, contributing to positive market sentiment ahead of major reports from Alphabet, Tesla, and IBM.
  • Semiconductor stocks, including Marvell Technology and Micron Technology, saw significant gains, indicating a recovery in the sector.

The stock market indices gained on Tuesday thanks to excitement over upcoming earnings reports and signs of renewed life from AI semiconductor stocks.

Investors are focused on earnings for IBM, Tesla, and Google this week.

The Nasdaq Composite added 1.3% on Tuesday morning while the other tech-heavy index, the S&P 500, gained 0.4%. Even the Dow Jones added 0.3% in early trading as the market turned broadly bullish on earnings reports.

Investors may be surprised to see gains across much of the market after the week started with Iran attacking targets in Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain. It appears that the market is ignoring the rising conflict there for the moment, but the fighting could heavily influence U.S. stock trading at any time.

Focus on Quarterly Earnings

3M (MMM) posted excellent earnings for the recent quarter, and their stock climbed more than 6%. They beat Wall Street estimates and posted full year guidance, and they anticipate adjusted sales growth of 4.5%.

General Motors (GM) stock rose 2% on Tuesday once they reported $48 billion in revenue and a 1.9% increase from the previous year. A statement from the company said, “The business continues to perform very well.”

Later this week will see major earnings reports from Alphabet (GOOGL), Tesla (TSLA), and International Business Machine (IBM). While all of these companies are expected to show gains in revenue and, for the most part, earnings per share, Tesla will be under extra scrutiny. The company delivered more vehicles this quarter than in the previous quarter, but their profit margins were much tighter, and shareholders and analysts alike may zero in on that.

Chip Stocks Climb

The other big news so far this week is that semiconductor stocks are making a small but important comeback. Marvell Technology (MRVL) rose around 6%, as did Micron Technology (MU). VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) gained 3% as the chip sector regained some lost footing after sharp declines last week.

SK Hynix (SKHY) fell sharply last week losing more than 10% after its U.S. stock index debut. However, the asset is up by nearly 6% this morning thanks to improving sentiment for chip stocks. We still anticipate plenty of shareholder worry over capex spending and AI development costs, but for the moment, these stocks are bullish and are regaining some of the ground that they lost.
