Regional currencies have weakened against the US dollar due to economic concerns, including the potential for the US administration to impose tougher sanctions on firm exporting critical chipmaking administration to impose tougher sanctions on firms exporting critical chipmaking equipment to China and suggestions that Taiwan might be asked to pay the US for defense.
In Japan, Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 went down by 0.16% to 40,063.79, and persistent inflation figures from Japan increased investor expectations of a rate hike by the Bank of Japan in July. Investors also anticipate the BoJ will reduce Japanese Government Bond (JGB) purchases as part of its Quantitative Tightening (QT) measures.
Higher interest rates and QT could reduce the interest rate differential with the US dollar, strengthening the Yen. A stronger Yen might affect buyer demand for Nikkei-listed export stocks.
Japan’s annual inflation rate held steady at 2.8% in June.
Meanwhile, the Hang Seng Index dropped by 1.86% with significant losses in real estate and tech stocks.
The Hang Seng Tech Index also decreased by 2.03% closing at 17,417.68. Alibaba fell by 2.37%, Baidu down by 1.73% and Tencent dropped by 0.81%.
The Hang Seng Mainland Properties Index plummeted by 3.6%
Mainland China’s equity markets also declined, with the Shanghai SE Composite Index and CSI 300 falling by 0.61% and 0.40%, respectively.
In South Korea, Kospi also decreased by 1.02% to close at 2,795.46.
In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 also went down by 0.81% closing at 7,971.6.
Investors should stay vigilant as trade tensions between the US and China continue to pose market challenges.
