Wall Street closes with gains and shows strong progress for the week

Wall Street saw slight gains, closing out a week marked by increased optimism following positive economic indicators from the U.S.

The three major Wall Street indices advanced in the final session of the week. The averages edged up modestly, closing out a period of greater optimism spurred by favorable signals from U.S. economic indicators.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, made up of 30 major companies, rose 0.24% to 40,659.76 points. Meanwhile, the S&P 500, encompassing 500 stocks, gained 0.20%, reaching 5,554.25 points. The tech-heavy Nasdaq advanced 0.21% to 17,631.72 points.

The week was driven by data that eased fears of a U.S. recession. In July, the annual inflation rate dropped to 2.9%, its lowest level in nearly three years, paving the way for a possible interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve.

Additionally, better-than-expected retail sales data was released. This was bolstered by a strong quarterly report from Walmart, which described consumer spending as “stable.” Unemployment benefit claims also declined.

The tech sector was one of the biggest winners of the week, improving by 8%, with semiconductors standing out with a 14% surge. Notably, shares of AI giant Nvidia jumped nearly 19%.

In the weekly performance of the indices, the tech rally was evident, with gains of 3.93% for the S&P 500 and 5.29% for the Nasdaq. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones, which includes more traditional sectors, posted a gain of 2.94%.

Investor attention now shifts back to monetary policy. Next week, all eyes will be on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who is set to speak at the Jackson Hole Central Bankers Symposium.
