The US Department of Justice has closed a chapter in darknet history by sentencing Roman Sterlingov, the operator of Bitcoin Fog, to over 12 years in prison.

Sterlingov, a dual Russian-Swedish national, was found guilty of running the longest operating bitcoin “mixing” service on the darknet, a service used to launder funds from illegal activities. This is a big win for the DOJ in their crackdown on cryptocurrency crimes.
Bitcoin Fog ran from 2011 to 2021 and processed over 1.2 million bitcoin transactions worth over $400 million. Many of those transactions came from darknet marketplaces involved in drug trafficking, identity theft and even child exploitation. As Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said “Roman Sterlingov ran the longest running bitcoin money laundering service on the darknet and today he paid the price.”

Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri said “Sterlingov laundered over $400 million in criminal proceeds through his cryptocurrency ‘mixing’ service that catered to criminals looking to hide dirty money.”
Massive Financial Penalties and Asset Forfeiture
In addition to his prison term, Sterlingov was ordered to pay a forfeiture money judgment of $395.6 million. This is a big number and shows the scale of the operation and the DOJ’s commitment to taking down illegal financial networks.
The DOJ also seized various cryptocurrency assets and monetary funds totaling around $1.76 million. Sterlingov was also ordered to forfeit 1,345 bitcoins linked to the Bitcoin Fog wallet, currently worth over $103 million. Chief Guy Ficco of IRS Criminal Investigation said “Today’s big prison term and hundreds of millions in financial sanctions shows just how serious this conviction is.”

DOJ’s Crackdown on Cryptocurrency Crime
This is a big win for the DOJ in their efforts to stop money laundering on the darknet via cryptocurrency. As cryptocurrency services become more popular among criminals looking for anonymity, the DOJ and other federal agencies are focusing on identifying and prosecuting these actors.
This is a warning to those using digital currency for illegal activities. As Deputy Attorney General Monaco said the DOJ will continue to go after those who use cryptocurrency for illegal purposes, a new era of regulatory scrutiny has begun.
