Trump Signals Progress With Iran
Market sentiment improved after President Trump claimed that an agreement involving the Strait of Hormuz had been reached and that denuclearisation talks with Iran would begin on Monday.
The Hormuz agreement remains unconfirmed, meaning traders may be reluctant to fully remove the geopolitical risk premium from oil and financial markets.
The planned negotiations provide a more concrete event for markets to monitor. Confirmation that talks have actually started could strengthen expectations for further de-escalation.
However, President Trump’s repeated warning that the United States remains prepared to act keeps the possibility of renewed military tensions firmly in the background.
Dow Jones Futures Extend Bullish Rebound
U.S. stock futures opened higher on Monday, with Dow Jones futures trading around 52,700 points after the index closed near 52,350 on Friday. The move represents a gain of approximately 0.6% and extends last week’s rebound from the 50-day simple moving average.
The recovery follows the market’s earlier decline after the Federal Reserve meeting, when elevated Treasury yields and uncertainty over the timing of future policy moves weighed on equities.
The early strength suggests that buyers remain willing to defend technical support. However, the sustainability of the rebound could depend heavily on developments in the Middle East and upcoming U.S. economic data.
Oil Falls as Geopolitical Risk Premium Shrinks
Crude oil opened lower as markets reacted to the possibility of reduced tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
A sustained de-escalation could remove part of the geopolitical premium embedded in oil prices and improve the outlook for global supply.
Lower energy prices could also provide some relief for inflation-sensitive economies and consumers. However, the decline could reverse quickly if negotiations fail or military tensions return.
Softer U.S. Data Supports Stocks
Recent U.S. economic data has provided some support for equities.
Advance second-quarter GDP growth came in at around 1.5%, while PCE inflation increased only 0.1%. The combination of slower growth and softer inflation could eventually strengthen expectations for easier Federal Reserve policy.
At the same time, stronger ADP employment data indicates that the labor market remains relatively resilient. This could limit the Fed’s urgency to reduce interest rates and keep Treasury yields elevated.
Jobs Data Could Set the Next Direction
The upcoming U.S. non-farm payroll report will be another major catalyst.
Markets are expecting roughly 85,000 new jobs, with unemployment projected at around 4.3%.
A weaker report could reinforce expectations for rate cuts, potentially supporting stocks through lower yields and a softer dollar.
Conversely, stronger employment data could strengthen the case for higher-for-longer interest rates.
For now, Dow Jones futures remain technically constructive, but traders should remain cautious as geopolitical headlines and economic data could quickly change the direction of the rebound.
