Progress in USMCA: Final Changes Getting Ready Before US Ratifies Trade Agreement
Senior officials from the US and Canada are all set to fly to Mexico later in the day to resolve the final stages of the USMCA trade agreement before it is put to a vote before the US Congress. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed hope that the final draft of the trade agreement could be ready by today.
While addressing CEOs at a forum on Monday, Pelosi stated, “We’re close. We’re not quite finished yet, we’re within range”. House Democrats and the US Trade Representative’s office are in the final stages of negotiations on key changes to clauses concerning enforcement of labor and environmental provisions in the USMCA trade agreement.
On Tuesday, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and White House Senior Adviser Jared Kushner will head to Mexico City to attend meetings with trade officials from Canada and Mexico as they work out the final details on the agreement. It will then be put for a vote in the US Congress and once ratified, could go on to replace the aging NAFTA trade agreement.
