The United States has been one of Ukraine’s primary military backers, providing over $55 billion in weapons, ammunition, and other security assistance since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The U.S. is set to deliver a new military aid package to Ukraine, including anti-aircraft missiles, President Joe Biden announced on Friday following a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
The call took place on the same day that Washington announced sanctions against hundreds of individuals and entities linked to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “I am proud to announce today a new military aid package for Ukraine,” Biden said in a statement, without specifying its dollar value.
“Russia will not prevail in this conflict. The independent people of Ukraine will prevail, and the United States, along with our allies and partners, will stand by them every step of the way,” Biden added.
The announcement comes as Ukrainian troops attempt to gain more ground in Russia’s western Kursk region, where they entered two weeks ago—a previously unprecedented move by a foreign army on Russian soil since World War II.
During the call with Biden, Zelensky expressed his appreciation for the package and wrote on social media platform X that Ukraine “urgently” needs the new weapons.
