A new initiative from Ubisoft aims to merge gaming with NFTs, with the leading videogame developer launching Ubisoft Quartz – its NFT platform based on the Tezos blockchain. According to an update by the company, it will be the first energy efficient NFTs playable in a AAA game and will feature three collectibles in its upcoming beta launch this week.

Ubisoft is calling its range of NFTs as ‘Digits’, and the first to launch will be three free NFTs based on its game Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. Each of the Digits can be minted only once and will link serial numbers to players’ usernames. The minted NFTs can then be sold on secondary markets, including Rarible and Objkt.

Digits will include in-game vehicles or weapons and will be offered to early adopters for free starting from December 9. At present, Ubisoft Quartz can only be accessed by users based in the US, Canada, Brazil, Spain, France, Belgium, Australia, Italy and Germany.

It’s interesting that Ubisoft chose to go with Tezos as the blockchain for supporting its NFTs as it is one of the most energy efficient PoS networks in the market presently. According to the firm’s blockchain technical director, Didier Genevois, “This type of blockchain achieves the same results while using significantly less energy than proof-of-work protocols. To give you an idea, a transaction on Tezos is equivalent to 30 seconds of video streaming, while on Bitcoin, it is equivalent to watching one year straight of video streaming!”

Ubisoft is betting big on NFTs as the next key transformation in the world of gaming. The company is optimistic that in the long term, Ubisoft Quartz can explore interoperability between games even as the blockchain technology in itself can place the value generated via engagement by players and creators directly into their hands.
