Mexico: Truck drivers initiate a nationwide strike

This Thursday, transporters across the country initiated a strike to demand greater road security from the government.

This Thursday, transporters across the country initiated a nationwide strike to demand greater road security from the government. Some of the routes that will be affected by mobilizations include the Mexico-Puebla, Mexico-Cuernavaca, Mexico-Pachuca, and Mexico-Querétaro highways. The measure will directly impact Mexico’s real economy.

The union informed early on that roads would not be blocked as long as the Army and authorities did not intervene and met the demands of the dissatisfied. Additionally, they requested understanding and support from the population to join the protest.

After postponing the national strike for a week, transporters are demonstrating this morning at various points across the country in response to what they perceive as failures by authorities regarding security and regulation of transportation.

Secretary of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde, stated in Thursday’s morning press conference that the government has held 120 meetings to address the concerns of the transporters, involving other agencies such as Security, Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, and the National Guard. Alcalde suggested there may be “political interests” behind the drivers’ movement during President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s press conference from Acapulco.

In Mexico, transporting goods from one city to another has become one of the most dangerous jobs. On average, 38 robberies to transporters are committed daily.

In 2023, an average of 25 transporters were robbed daily, with violence reported in eight out of every ten cases, according to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).

Throughout 2023, at least 9,181 transporters were assaulted on various highways.
