Colombia refuses to send weapons to Ukraine for the war against Russia.

In statements to the press in Munich, Germany, Petro stated that Ukraine does not need weapons but peace. He also mentioned that Colombia is willing to make all contributions to finding a middle ground.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro declared that he will not send weapons to Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia for two years. Speaking to the press in Munich, Germany, Petro stated that Ukraine does not need weapons but peace, and Colombia is prepared to make all contributions to find a middle ground.

He emphasized that the war between Russia and Ukraine, ongoing since February 24, 2022, must come to an end. Petro asserted, “Colombia will not send weapons to Ukraine in support of peace, but is willing to contribute to ensuring dialogue between the parties.”

The Colombian president stated that sending weapons to Ukraine only fuels the war and noted that the vast majority of international public opinion is against this conflict. Petro suggested that the UN must undergo transformation, adding, “The vast majority wants peace, but those with veto power prevent it; that’s not democracy.

If we truly want to build a global democracy, the votes of the majority should have more value than the veto.”

In Colombia, there is controversy surrounding individuals involved in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia as mercenaries. Many of them have appeared on social media wearing their uniforms and carrying weapons, and some have acknowledged the loss of fellow countrymen in combat.

In response, the Colombian Foreign Ministry addressed allegations from Moscow regarding whether Gustavo Petro’s government was funding these mercenaries in Ukraine. This has reopened a longstanding wound stemming from Iván Duque’s presidency due to his opposition to Vladimir Putin.

Following the statements made by the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, regarding the appearance of Colombian mercenaries in the conflict with Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement clarifying: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia wishes to clarify that the presence of Colombian citizens who have become victims in the war in Ukraine is due to personal decisions, and there are no bilateral agreements that make such involvement possible.”
