Meanwhile, during the first presidential debate of 2024 organized by the National Electoral Institute (INE), social media became the digital agora where the exchange of ideas, criticisms, and support for the candidates seeking the presidential seat took place.

The social network X emerged as the platform where internet users could follow and participate in the conversation about the first presidential debate. Through this interactive platform, users could share opinions, comments, and questions regarding the exercise organized by the INE.
The platform’s trends served as a reflection of users’ sentiments regarding the proposals of the candidates; Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, candidate of the “Sigamos haciendo historia” coalition, Xóchitl Gálvez Ruíz, candidate of the “Fuerza y Corazón por México” coalition, and Jorge Álvarez Máynez, candidate of Movimiento Ciudadano, who participated in the first presidential debate.

Once the debate started, various terms gained prominence among Mexico’s popular topics on the X platform. Hashtags like #ClaudiaPresidenta, ‘La Dra.’ (The Doctor), and Claudia accumulated hundreds of comments, mostly expressing support for the candidate of the “Fuerza y Corazón por México” coalition, who has over 2,800,000 followers on the social network owned by Elon Musk.

On the other hand, Xóchitl Gálvez Ruiz, with over 880,000 followers, also found support under the trending topic “Vamos Xóchil,” and even, the influence of her participation propelled trends such as “La Dama de Hielo” (The Ice Lady), a nickname she used to refer to Claudia Sheinbaum for her alleged indifference and lack of sensitivity regarding the tragedy of the collapse of metro line 12 in Mexico City, and “Rébsamen,” referring to the accusations against Sheinbaum Pardo for her alleged negligence during the collapse of the school, a topic she exposed documentation about on her social media, among others.
