Solata Foods Recalls Fresh Spinach And Spinach Products

Newburgh, New York-based Solata Foods LLC is recalling its “Fresh Spinach” and spinach products citing potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The impacted spinach and salad mixes come under various brands of Solata, Gaia Organic, Full Circle Organic, Farmer Direct, Uncle Vinny’s, and Bogopa. The recalled products have lot numbers # 40606 and 11006 on the package, with an expiration date of 6/20/24 and 6/24/24, and various UPC codes. They were distributed locally in retail stores.

The recall was initiated after the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors discovered the contamination after sampling. Subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of L. monocytogenes in a 9-ounce package of Bogopa “Fresh Spinach.” The company has since suspended the production of the product.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, while L. monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

However, the company has not received any reports of illnesses related to the recalled products so far.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled spinach products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
