Wall Street Closes with Losses Amid Cautious Market Sentiment

By Sector, the Energy Sector Experienced the Largest Losses, Impacted by the Decline in Oil Futures Amid Fears of Weak Demand from China.

Wall Street’s three major indices closed with losses on Tuesday as the markets remained cautious, awaiting clarity on the future direction of Federal Reserve interest rates.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, comprising 30 blue-chip companies, fell by 0.15% to 40,834.97 points. The S&P 500, which tracks 500 large-cap stocks, dropped 0.20% to 5,597.12 points. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite declined by 0.33% to 17,816.94 points.

With no significant economic data on the calendar, traders adopted a cautious stance ahead of the Fed’s release of minutes from its latest policy meeting, where interest rates were kept unchanged.

These minutes are expected to provide insight into whether a rate cut might be on the table for September. This anticipation is further heightened by the upcoming remarks from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell at the Jackson Hole meeting.

Among the top performers, Netflix shares rose by 1.45% after reporting a 150% increase in ad sales during its most recent season premiere, along with new business-oriented features.

Eli Lilly also stood out, gaining 3% after announcing positive three-year clinical trial results for its weight management drug, which showed a significant reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes.

By sector, energy experienced the steepest losses (-2.65%), hit by declining oil futures amid concerns over weak demand from China. Within the Dow Jones, aerospace giant Boeing led the declines, falling 4.20%.
