Moscow experiences one of the most significant drone attacks in its history
Russia, which launched a large-scale assault against Ukraine in February 2022, has been facing an unprecedented Ukrainian offensive in its Kursk border region since August 6.
Moscow experienced “one of the most significant” Ukrainian drone offensives since the conflict began, according to the mayor of the Russian capital. Ukraine claimed to have neutralized fifty Russian drones.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that “eleven drones were destroyed” over Moscow and its region during the night, describing it as “one of the most significant drone attacks ever” against the city, according to Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.
Moscow and its surrounding area, located more than 500 km from the Ukrainian border, had already been hit by sporadic drone attacks. During the summer of 2023, some drones were destroyed over the city’s financial district, and in May 2023, two drones were intercepted over the Kremlin, in the heart of Moscow.
In total, during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, Russian air defense systems destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones over the Moscow region, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense.
For the past two weeks, Russia has been facing a significant cross-border offensive from Ukrainian forces, which is ongoing. Meanwhile, Russian troops continue their advance in eastern Ukraine towards the city of Pokrovsk.
Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mikola Oleschuk reported that during the night, Ukrainian air defenses shot down 50 explosive drones and a missile launched by Russia against Ukrainian territory.
