Trump Taps Musk, Ramaswamy to Head New Government Efficiency Department

Donald Trump declared that Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk will head a new “Department of Government Efficiency” after defeating Kamala Harris in the U.S. presidential election.

This project, which was motivated by a campaign pledge, attempts to decrease federal bureaucracy and streamline government procedures. Trump commended Musk for his campaigning in important states and hailed him as a “super genius.”

A $100 million donation and widespread social media campaigning via his platform, X (previously Twitter), were two examples of Musk’s support.

DOGE’s Mission: Cut Bureaucracy and Costs

Trump has given the DOGE project the mandate to “dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructuring Federal Agencies.” In order to solve inefficiencies and remove fraud, the agency plans to implement extensive government control.

Trump called this department “potentially, the Manhattan Project of our time” and highlighted its aim as part of his “Save America” campaign. Musk enthusiastically replied on X, stating, “Destroyable? Definitely a danger to bureaucracy!

By granting DOGE independence from traditional government procedures, Trump’s plan removes the need for Senate approval for Musk and Ramaswamy to serve as designated advisors.

They can continue to play a role in the private sector while promoting federal reforms thanks to this strategy. During the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration on July 4, 2026, Trump referred to their efforts as a “gift to America.”

Musk has expressed his intention to cut $2 trillion in federal spending, with a particular emphasis on shrinking the size of the government. There is little information available, but Musk has previously criticized some federal spending, such as that for NPR and the Department of Education.

Ramaswamy mirrored Musk’s cost-cutting philosophy by calling for a 25% decrease in the government workforce through changes of working hours, which he says may cause a “mass exodus” of workers.

Ramaswamy advocated for the dismantling of a number of federal agencies, including the Department of Education, ATF, and FBI, during his presidential candidacy.

In order to more efficiently streamline or eliminate federal agencies, Trump’s DOGE plan may make use of the “Presidential Reorganization Act,” which was last applied during the Reagan administration.

This strategy would need the backing of Congress, which Trump might pursue given his bold plans to restructure the government.

Entrepreneurial Vision for Federal Reform

The goals of DOGE are consistent with Trump’s previous campaign statements of limiting federal authority and overly strict rules. Trump hinted at the department’s ability to fundamentally alter the federal landscape by equating its purpose with the inventive spirit of the Manhattan Project during World War II.

This strategy represents a major shift toward business-minded government change and is consistent with Trump’s overarching goal of lowering bureaucratic obstacles. A readiness to apply entrepreneurial concepts to the federal system is demonstrated by Musk and Ramaswamy’s involvement, which could challenge established public-sector standards.

Additionally, the announcement referred to the possibility of more significant reforms affecting important agencies. Trump is focused on creating a streamlined, efficiency-driven administration, which is consistent with his continuous attempts to create a cabinet with powerful Republicans, including expected selections for positions like Secretary of State and Homeland Security.

In keeping with his overarching goal of a more efficient and responsible U.S. government, the DOGE’s early establishment demonstrates his proactive commitment to reorganizing government operations.
