Javier Milei Confident of Trump Support for IMF Deal
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Argentina’s President Javier Milei expressed optimism that Donald Trump, following his recent election victory over Kamala Harris, will help Argentina secure “billions of dollars” in new financing from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Milei emphasized his belief in the strong ideological alignment between himself and Trump, stating that this shared vision could pave the way for deeper collaboration. “I believe a free trade agreement with the U.S. is highly possible because they now see us as a reliable partner,” Milei told WSJ, adding that he views Argentina as a strategic ally to the United States.
Trump Impact
Since Trump’s election win on November 5, the connection between the two leaders has strengthened, with Milei attending a dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and confirming his plans to participate in Trump’s inauguration ceremony. Argentina’s libertarian administration hopes this relationship will lead to tangible support from the U.S. government, particularly in negotiations with the IMF.
Argentina’s Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, has echoed this optimism, stating that a new agreement with the IMF could be finalized by the first quarter of next year. Caputo also highlighted the positive reception of Argentina’s economic plan by IMF officials, saying they are “amazed” by the country’s progress.
Possible Free Trade Agreement
While Trump’s administration has historically favored protectionist economic policies, Milei remains confident that a free trade agreement with the U.S. will be achievable. He reiterated that Argentina is now positioned as a trusted and strategic partner in the eyes of the U.S., signaling a new chapter in bilateral relations.
In his interview with The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Argentina’s President Javier Milei underscored his commitment to pursuing free trade agreements with as many nations as possible, including China. “All the free trade agreements we can make, we will make,” he asserted, emphasizing his focus on fostering open trade policies to strengthen Argentina’s global economic ties.
