xAI has raised $6 billion in its latest round, bringing total to $12 billion.

That’ll help them develop generative AI, specifically Grok AI which powers features on X (formerly Twitter). Big investors including Andreessen Horowitz, BlackRock, Fidelity and Nvidia all who invested in Musk’s Twitter acquisition. Now xAI can compete with OpenAI and Anthropic.

xAI’s Generative AI Model Grok Grows

xAI’s Grok model is making big waves in the AI world. Integrated into X, Grok powers a chatbot that gives premium and free users a better experience by summarizing trending news and analyzing visuals. The model is getting more capabilities with an API that allows 3rd party developers to integrate Grok into their apps. xAI also launched a standalone iOS app for testing their AI solutions.

Memphis Data Center and Expansion Plans

To support their rapid AI development xAI has a state of the art data center in Memphis with 100,000 Nvidia GPUs. The facility was built in 122 days and is the heart of the company’s AI capabilities. xAI plans to double their data center capacity by 2025 and will focus on infrastructure and power. This is part of Musk’s broader plan to put AI into many industries including autonomous driving at Tesla.

Legal Battle and Future Prospects

Despite all this xAI is still up against OpenAI and Anthropic. Musk just sued OpenAI and Microsoft for anti-competitive behavior including claims OpenAI forced investors to not invest in xAI. Meanwhile Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is also calling for stricter regulation of AI companies to prevent resource misuse.
