Alphabet shares rebounded ahead of this week’s earnings report, but investors remain cautious as strong AI and cloud growth must prove capable of justifying the company’s soaring infrastructure spending and premium valuation.

Alphabet Shares Recover Ahead of Key Earnings Report

Alphabet shares staged a strong rebound after last week’s sharp pullback, climbing back above the $350 level as investors positioned themselves ahead of one of the company’s most closely watched earnings reports in recent years.

The recovery followed a steep reversal that pushed the stock toward the $340 region after concerns resurfaced over Alphabet’s rapidly rising AI spending, delayed product launches, growing infrastructure costs, and intensifying competition across the artificial intelligence sector.

While the renewed buying reflects improving confidence, the upcoming quarterly results are expected to determine whether the rally has further room to run or whether investors will remain focused on the growing cost of Alphabet’s AI ambitions.

Search Restores Investor Confidence

One of the biggest drivers behind the latest rebound has been growing confidence in Google’s AI-enhanced Search platform.

Earlier this year, investors feared that generative AI applications could gradually erode Google’s dominance in online search as users experimented with AI chatbots and specialized search platforms.

Those concerns have eased as Google continues integrating advanced generative AI features directly into its search engine.

Recent data indicates that AI-powered search queries are generating stronger user engagement while also improving advertising efficiency, allowing advertisers to better target customers and achieve higher returns.

Rather than disrupting Google’s core business, artificial intelligence is increasingly being viewed as an enhancement that strengthens the company’s competitive position.

This has reinforced investor confidence that Search will remain Alphabet’s largest profit engine even as the industry evolves.

Google Cloud Emerges as a Major Growth Engine

Beyond Search, Google Cloud continues to play an increasingly important role in Alphabet’s investment story.

Enterprise demand for AI infrastructure remains exceptionally strong as businesses expand the use of large language models and advanced computing workloads.

Google’s proprietary Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) have become a significant competitive advantage, allowing the company to offer efficient AI computing while reducing reliance on third-party hardware.

Cloud is no longer viewed simply as a complementary business.

Instead, many investors now see it as one of Alphabet’s fastest-growing and highest-margin divisions, capable of generating recurring revenue while diversifying earnings beyond digital advertising.

If Google Cloud delivers another quarter of robust growth, it could provide additional evidence that Alphabet’s massive AI investments are beginning to translate into meaningful commercial opportunities.

Technical Levels in Focus

From a chart perspective, Alphabet  slipped below its 50-day moving average (yellow) near $320 in February and the 100 SMA (green) at $300 was broken too, which opened the door for further losses toward $270.  That’s where the 200 SMA (red) stood and it provided support, holding the decline and we saw a rebound from there, sending GOOGL above $408 on in May but reversed in June and is heading lower again, slipping below $360 today after failing to break above the 50 daily SMA.

Earnings Will Be the Biggest Test Yet

This week’s earnings report is likely to become a defining event for Alphabet investors.

Markets will be watching not only revenue and earnings growth but also management’s commentary on AI monetization, capital spending, and future investment plans.

One positive factor attracting attention is Alphabet’s investment in Anthropic.

The company owns approximately 14% of Anthropic, a stake that has appreciated significantly following the AI company’s latest valuation.

Bank of America estimates that the higher valuation could generate roughly $80 billion in unrealized gains this quarter, contributing to a stronger earnings outlook and supporting a forecast that exceeds current Wall Street expectations.

Investors will also closely monitor advertising performance, Google Cloud growth, operating margins, and management’s guidance for the remainder of the year.

Alphabet Earnings Preview

Alphabet (GOOGL) is set to report its Q2 2026 earnings on July 22, 2026. Analysts project total revenue around $116.8 billion (representing over 21% year-over-year growth) and earnings per share (EPS) of $2.86. The core focus will be on AI monetization and Google Cloud’s growth.
Q2 2026 Projections & Key Metrics
  • Total Revenue: Expected to reach roughly $116.8 billion.
  • EPS: Expected to land at $2.86, representing a 23.8% increase year-over-year.
  • Google Cloud: Projected to be the primary growth driver, with analysts anticipating approximately $22.8 billion in revenue—a massive ~ 67% increase driven by strong mid-to-long-term AI demand.
  • Operating Margin: Forecasted to expand to 35.3% due to continued operational leverage in cloud computing.
Factors to Watch
  • Capital Expenditures (Capex): Following Alphabet’s heavy AI infrastructure build-out (guided at $180–190 billion for FY2026), investors will look for signs of how these investments translate into tangible, high-margin revenue.
  • Gemini Momentum: Updates on user adoption, API integration, and enterprise performance will clarify how well Google’s model family competes against peers like OpenAI and Anthropic.
  • Search and Advertising Resilience: Wall Street will monitor how generative AI summaries and ongoing regulatory/antitrust scrutiny impact core ad revenues, which represent the bulk of the company’s cash flow.

Gemini Delays Continue to Raise Questions

Despite improving sentiment, concerns surrounding Alphabet’s AI execution have not disappeared.

Reports suggest the launch of Gemini 3.5 Pro has been delayed as engineers continue refining coding capabilities and overall performance.

While delays are common in advanced software development, the postponement comes as competition continues to intensify.

OpenAI, Anthropic, and several emerging AI companies continue releasing increasingly capable models, raising expectations across the industry.

Some reports indicate that competing models currently outperform Gemini in several enterprise and software development benchmarks, increasing pressure on Alphabet to deliver meaningful improvements before its next major release.

These delays have led some investors to question whether Alphabet can maintain its leadership position as AI innovation accelerates.

Rising AI Costs Remain Under the Spotlight

Alphabet continues investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The company is expected to spend between $175 billion and $185 billion on capital expenditures during 2026, funding data centers, networking equipment, AI chips, and cloud infrastructure.

Management argues that these investments are essential to supporting future growth and maintaining technological leadership.

However, investors are increasingly focused on whether returns will justify the enormous spending.

The market has become less willing to reward AI investment alone and is instead demanding measurable improvements in revenue, profitability, and free cash flow.

This shift explains why Alphabet’s valuation has become more sensitive to execution risks than at any point during the current AI cycle.

Talent Competition and Regulation Add Further Challenges

Alphabet also continues to navigate growing competition for AI talent.

Reports of high-profile departures from Google’s AI teams and DeepMind have highlighted how aggressively technology companies are competing to recruit leading researchers.

Retaining experienced engineers has become increasingly important as AI capabilities evolve at a rapid pace.

Regulatory scrutiny also remains a key consideration.

Alphabet continues facing antitrust investigations related to its search and advertising businesses, although recent legal developments have eased some fears of a worst-case outcome involving structural changes to the company.

While regulatory uncertainty has not disappeared, investors appear more optimistic that prolonged legal disputes may be resolved without significantly disrupting Alphabet’s core operations.

Strong Fundamentals Continue to Support the Business

Despite the recent volatility, Alphabet remains one of the world’s strongest technology companies, supported by dominant positions in digital advertising, online search, cloud computing, Android, and artificial intelligence.

The company continues generating substantial cash flow while expanding into new AI-powered products and services.

Nevertheless, investors are entering this week’s earnings announcement with elevated expectations. Strong results from Google Cloud, resilient advertising growth, improving AI monetization, and disciplined capital allocation will likely be needed to sustain the recent rebound. At the same time, any signs of slowing cloud growth, weaker advertising demand, higher-than-expected spending, or further delays in AI development could quickly revive concerns about whether Alphabet’s ambitious investment strategy can deliver returns that justify its premium valuation.
