Archer Aviation shares surged nearly 20% after the electric aircraft developer and defense technology company Anduril unveiled a new autonomous vertical takeoff and landing platform.
ACHR closed at $5.31 before rising to $5.39 in overnight trading, extending a sharp rebound from recent lows.
The announcement strengthens Archer’s effort to diversify beyond commercial air taxis and enter a defense market that could generate contracts without requiring the same civilian certification process as its Midnight aircraft.
However, the stock still faces considerable technical resistance, while Archer remains a pre-revenue aerospace company with substantial execution, regulatory and cash-burn risks.
Archer Stock Rallies on Thunder Autonomous Aircraft
Archer and Anduril introduced a jointly developed hybrid-electric VTOL platform at the Farnborough International Airshow.
Anduril showcased the defense version, called Thunder, as a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft designed to operate alongside current and next-generation crewed attack and assault aircraft.
The companies describe the clean-sheet platform as capable of supporting both commercial and military applications. Its hybrid-electric powertrain is intended to provide greater range and endurance than a fully electric aircraft while retaining the flexibility of vertical takeoff and landing.
The aircraft uses dual tilt rotors that allow it to take off vertically and transition into more efficient forward flight.
That combination could make Thunder suitable for missions in locations without traditional runways, including contested or remote environments.
The platform may eventually support reconnaissance, logistics, strike operations and other missions in which autonomous aircraft can reduce the risk to human pilots.
For Archer, the launch represents a major expansion beyond the urban air-mobility market that has historically defined the company.
Why Defense Could Become an Important Revenue Opportunity
Archer’s commercial strategy centers on Midnight, an electric air taxi designed to transport passengers on short urban routes.
However, commercial operations remain dependent on regulatory approval, manufacturing scale and the development of supporting infrastructure such as vertiports and charging systems.
Defense aviation operates under a different framework.
Military aircraft do not necessarily require the same Federal Aviation Administration type-certification process as commercial passenger vehicles. That could allow Archer to begin generating defense-related revenue before Midnight achieves full commercial certification.
The US military is also increasing its focus on autonomous systems, artificial intelligence and lower-cost aircraft that can operate alongside more expensive crewed platforms.
Thunder is designed to address that opportunity by combining Anduril’s autonomous defense software with Archer’s aircraft engineering, electric propulsion and manufacturing capabilities.
The two companies originally announced their exclusive partnership in December 2024, with the goal of developing a hybrid VTOL aircraft for a potential US Department of Defense program of record. Archer raised an additional $430 million alongside that agreement.
The new aircraft gives investors the first detailed view of what that partnership has produced.
Thunder Diversifies Archer Beyond the Air-Taxi Market
Archer’s defense expansion is particularly important because the commercial eVTOL industry has taken longer to develop than many early investors expected.
Aircraft certification is complex, requiring developers to demonstrate that designs, components, flight controls and manufacturing processes meet strict safety standards.
Companies must also prove that they can manufacture aircraft consistently and operate them safely across thousands of flights.
Archer has continued to make progress with the FAA and has said initial US operations could begin under pilot programs before full commercial certification. The company is also pursuing operations in international markets, including the United Arab Emirates.
CEO Adam Goldstein has said Archer is working toward having certified air taxis operating around the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
That remains an ambitious objective.
Even if flight testing progresses as planned, certification delays or infrastructure constraints could prevent Archer from reaching commercial scale on its preferred timeline.
Thunder gives the company another growth path while the civilian certification process continues.
Archer Builds a Broader Autonomous Aviation Platform
The Anduril aircraft is part of a broader effort by Archer to expand into autonomous aviation and artificial intelligence.
The company has been developing an aviation-focused AI platform designed to process information including weather, terrain, aircraft telemetry and air-traffic communications.
Archer is also working with technology partners such as Nvidia, Palantir and Starlink as it builds the computing and connectivity systems required for advanced aircraft operations.
The long-term opportunity extends beyond flying taxis.
Autonomous and semi-autonomous aircraft could eventually support cargo transport, industrial inspection, emergency response, defense logistics and operations in environments considered too dangerous for conventional aviation.
The challenge is turning those possibilities into customer contracts and recurring revenue.
Archer is expected to provide additional details on potential commercial customers for the new dual-use platform following the Farnborough unveiling.
Any confirmed orders, government awards or funded development agreements could become important catalysts for ACHR stock.
Strong Liquidity Supports Development, but Cash Burn Remains a Risk
Archer ended the first quarter of 2026 with approximately $1.8 billion in liquidity and limited debt exposure.
That balance sheet gives the company meaningful resources to continue developing Midnight, Thunder, its AI systems and its manufacturing operations.
However, Archer remains in a capital-intensive stage.
Designing and certifying aircraft requires substantial engineering, testing and regulatory spending. Building manufacturing capacity adds further costs before meaningful aircraft deliveries begin.
The company must therefore manage its cash carefully while it waits for commercial and defense revenue to scale.
Future funding could come from customer payments, strategic partnerships, government awards or additional capital raises.
Dilution remains a risk for shareholders if development and production costs rise faster than expected.
Investors will therefore watch not only aircraft milestones but also quarterly operating expenses, adjusted EBITDA losses and liquidity levels.
ACHR Technical Analysis: Rally Tests $5.39-$5.61 Resistance
From a technical perspective, Archer Aviation’s 4-hour chart has improved significantly following Monday’s 19.59% gain.
ACHR has moved above its major short-term moving averages.
The 10 EMA stands at $4.87, the 20 EMA at $4.85, and the 30 EMA at $4.91. The 50 EMA near $5.06, 50 SMA at $5.02, VWMA at $4.94 and Hull Moving Average near $5.05 are also showing buy signals.
These indicators create an initial support zone between approximately $4.85 and $5.06.
As long as the stock remains above $5, buyers retain control of the short-term recovery.
The first major resistance is now the 100 EMA at $5.39, which matches the latest overnight price.

A sustained move above this level could allow ACHR to test the 100 SMA near $5.61.
Above that, the most important resistance band sits between $5.78 and $5.95, where the 200 SMA and 200 EMA are concentrated.
A confirmed breakout above $6 would represent a meaningful technical improvement and could open the way toward $6.50, followed by the $7 region.
However, failure to clear $5.60-$6 could encourage profit-taking after Monday’s sharp rally.
Initial support sits near $5.05, followed by the broader $4.80-$4.95 moving-average cluster.
A break below $4.80 would weaken the rebound and place $4.60, followed by the recent low area near $4.30, back in focus.
Momentum indicators remain constructive but show signs that the immediate rally may be stretched.
RSI stands at 59.85, reflecting stronger buying pressure without entering overbought territory. MACD has shifted to a buy signal, while Bull Bear Power remains positive.
However, Williams %R is flashing a sell signal at −11.50, suggesting the stock is approaching short-term overbought conditions. Momentum also remains marked as a sell despite the price increase.
The ADX reading of 18.98 indicates the trend has not yet developed strong directional conviction.
Is Archer Aviation (ACHR) a Good Buy in 2026?
Thunder gives Archer a more credible path into defense and autonomous aviation while commercial air-taxi certification continues.
The partnership combines Anduril’s autonomy platform with Archer’s propulsion, aircraft design and manufacturing capabilities, potentially opening a large market for unmanned vertical-lift systems.
However, the investment case still depends on execution.
Investors will want to see funded defense awards, confirmed customers, successful flight testing and continued progress toward Midnight certification.
Technically, ACHR has strengthened above $5, but the stock is now approaching an important resistance area between $5.39 and $5.95.
A breakout above $6 could extend the recovery. Failure to clear that zone could leave the stock consolidating between approximately $4.80 and $5.60.
For now, Thunder has given Archer’s growth story a powerful new catalyst. The next test is whether the aircraft generates contracts and revenue rather than remaining another promising aerospace development program.
